How to Check and Repair a Computer Hard Drive

One of the causes of the computer often hangs, the computer restarts itself and the occurrence of a blue screen is a problem / damage to the computer hard drive. Damage to the hard drive is caused by the frequent shutdown of the computer without a shutdown command and due to disturbances in the flow of electricity such as sudden power outages. or the occurrence of electrical voltage spikes like what usually happens when there is lightning when it rains.


In addition, the age factor (lifetime) of the hard drive itself is also something that can affect the performance of the hard drive. On this occasion I will share information about How to Repair a Hard Drive Using the Checkdisk/CHKDSK.EXE Command.


Checkdisk is a Windows default tool that we can use to test and repair the condition of the hard drive. Running the Checkdisk command regularly is also one way to maintain and improve computer performance. In general, it is enough with the Checkdisk/CHKDSK command, we can repair hard disk damage such as bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. We can run the Checkdisk command in 2 ways, namely through the Command Prompt and through My Computer or Windows Explorer.


1. Run the CHKDSK command in the Command Prompt.

At the Command Prompt screen type the command: CHKDSK D:

The command will run CHKDSK on Drive D in read-only mode.

Type the command: CHKDSK D:/F

This command is used to fix errors without scanning for bad sectors.

Type the command: CHKDSK D:/R

This command is used to fix errors, find bad sectors and recover data.

If you want to show what options we can do, just type the help command by typing the command: CHKDSK /?


2. Run the CHKDSK command in My Computer or Window Explorer.


Open Windows Explorer, or My Computer.

Right-click on the hard disk to be checked, click Properties.

Click the Tools tab, in the Error Checking option, click Check Now..

The Check disk options window will appear.

To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.

To fix file system errors, tick Fix file system errors automatically,

To fix the error find bad sectors and recover data select Scan and try bad sectors recovery,

You can also tick both options if needed.


If a message appears: Chkdsk cannot be started because the volume is being used by another process. Chkdsk can run if this volume is unloaded first. ALL OPEN HANDLING FOR THIS VOLUME WILL BE VALID. Do you want to force down on this volume? (Y/N) type Y and Enter.


If a message appears: Chkdsk cannot be started because the volume is being used by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Type Y, and ENTER then restart the computer to run Scandisk.



To repair the hard drive using the Checkdisk utility/CHKDSK command, there are several ways we can do, namely:


  • If the computer can still boot and login to Windows, then the two ways to run CHKDSK.EXE mentioned above (via the command prompt or Windows Explorer) can be done.
  • If the hard drive does not boot, then we have to take the hard drive and install it on another computer, then run the Checkdisk/CHKDSK command.
  • Using the Windows Setup CD and executing CHKDSK commands via the Recovery Console Menu..
  • Using the UBCD4WIN CD or Hirens Boot CD.


That's how to repair a hard drive using the default Windows utility: Checkdisk/CHKDSK.EXE, and from my own experience in repairing computers, this tool has proven to be quite effective in overcoming hard drive damage.
